This work is now complete and the outputs are now available online. The guide has been called the Village Affordable Housing Handbook. It provides a detailed analysis and explanation of how to assess the benefits arising from the provision of new affordable housing in smaller rural settlements. Embedding Localism in Spatial Planning Shropshire Council & Planning Aid
Rural Innovation was part of a public, civil and private sector partnership which has developed an approach to embedding localism in spatial planning. Shropshire Council's Core Strategy seeks to enable smaller rural communities to self determine their future role and so escape the "sustainability trap". Rural Housing Strategy Cheshire West & Chester Council
This Rural Innovation and GVA Grimley Rural Housing Strategy has now been published for consultation. You can find it here. The evidence based Strategy to inform the Local Development Framework and the delivery of housing in Cheshire West over the local plan period. Cheshire West & Chester is a new unitary council with ambitious plans for growth. They also have an affordability problem and are keen to improve the sustainability of their smaller rural settlements.
Rural Regeneration Strategy & Action Plan Cheshire West & Chester Council
This Rural Innovation and Amion Consulting evidence based strategy and action plan for the West Cheshire & Chester’s Market Town and Rural programme area has now been published for consultation. You can see it here. The strategy will inform the Local Development Framework and influence the council’s capital programme and asset management strategy.
Rural Toolkit - Collaborative Planning Shropshire Council
Rob Hindle has been retained by Shropshire Council to support their roll out and further development of the Sustainable Rural Communities Toolkit developed by Rural Innovation and Roger Tym & Partners in Devon. Shropshire have committed to using the Toolkit as a core part of their community engagement process and to enable the implementation of their Local Development Framework.

Rob Hindle is leading a team of associates (Ivan Annibal, James Shorten and Jo Lavis) to develop a model to assess the impact of affordable housing on the sustainability of rural communities. The project includes a Community of Practice for interested practitioners.
Assessing the Impact of the Recession on Rural Services Defra
Rob Hindle is leading a team of associates (Ivan Annibal, Professor Glyn Owen and Dan Bates) to assess the likely impact of the recession on rural services. The work includes analysis of the distribution of expenditure across rural and urban areas, of funding formula and local service planning.
This work is now complete (September 2011) and has now been published by the Defra's Rural Communities Policy Unit under the title "Developing Collaborative and Innovative Approaches to Rural Service Delivery". You can access a copy of the report from here.
Barriers to Rural Innovation Defra
Rob Hindle is working with Professor Rob Huggins and colleagues from GHK to research opportunities and barriers for innovation in rural businesses. The project is being jointly funded by Defra and the network of Regional Development Agencies and seeks to understand whether there are any barriers to innovation for rural businesses.
Wild Zone Natural England
Rob Hindle is working with public agencies (RSPB, Natural England, Cumbria Wildlife Trust, the Forestry Commission and Cumbria Tourism) and tourism businesses in Cumbria to develop a cluster group for businesses involved in the provision of responsible experiences of wild life and wild places.
Mersey Rural Economy Action Plan St.Helens Council, the Mersey Forest & NWDA
Rob Hindle and Michael Lough are supporting the Merseyside local authorities and the Mersey Forest in the development of Economic Strategy and Action Plan for Rural Merseyside. The work is being delivered in two phases. The first phase includes in depth analysis of the “value and volume” of rural activity in the rural area. The second phase consists of action planning and the development of a governance structure.
